Rising loss costs from social inflation, on top of economic inflation, strain insurer reserves and call liability insurance rate adequacy into question. The Keystone State is at the epicenter of this national trend, aided and abetted by litigation funding. Pennsylvania, ranked the fourth most litigious state in the union, features heavily in pharmaceutical, fertilizer and asbestos litigation. Smaller insurers not writing industrial risks are not immune from social inflation, as the phenomenon also impacts lower-level personal and commercial auto, CGL, BOP and professional liability portfolios. This session lifts the covers on social inflation and presents remedies to keep the trend from creating another liability crisis.

This session will be a review of industry data through year-end 2021 for the P&C industry overall as well as for mutual companies, including those in PAMIC’s region. We will also cover industry trends such as the impact of economic and social inflation, increasing interest rates, encroachment from InsurTech companies, rates vs. loss trends, impact of climate change, shifts in consumer behavior, the “new normal” post the pandemic, etc. Lastly, Bob will provide his outlook for 2022.
